Experiential Design

Exhibition projects for experiential public installations. These projects were highly collaborative with landscape designers, product fabricators, material providers, historic preservationists, varying architects and engineers, entertainment organizations, and more. Tasks include construction drawings, site surveys, hands-on installation and testing, and on-site maintenance.

Experiential design is more than display. These moments engage users to step into a temporary world where their senses are amplified to evoke an emotion.

The Smelly Tunnel

The Smelly Tunnel was an olfactory installation built for the Philadelphia Flower Show in FDR Park. The piece used scented mist to explore the healing power of nature. I brought the initial vision to life structurally, proposing 3 open-air custom designed arches. I designed the heights, width, and structural arch to minimize construction costs by using truss systems to not only be decorative, but to also minimize wind load and improve lateral integrity. The gradual heights of the arches manipulate the user’s contact with the mist and scent.

I worked closely with fabricator, Carl Durkow, who developed the ‘starburst’ trust design, visiting the fabrication shop and providing him with all structural foundation needs. I worked with misting manufacturer for delivery, maintenance, and installation. I also designed landscape to meet ADA code requirements, chose aggregate materials, and designed circulation for site orientation to keep total costs under project budget.

I coordinated all on-site material delivery with various subcontractors and PHS organization, and physically assisted with hands-on building and installation. I maintained site operations for the entirety of the exhibition. Our installation was recognized by The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Halloween Nights - Eastern State Penitentiary

Halloween Nights at Eastern State Penitentiary is a premier haunted festival in Philadelphia, featuring immersive haunted houses, interactive experiences, themed bars, and historical tours from September 19 through November 8. The exhibition includes 5 different haunted houses.

In addition to the six-month preservation of the existing site conditions, we also designed new exhibit structures for the haunted houses. I frequently surveyed existing conditions, documented and researched all historic-preserved materials and masonry, and drew in plan, section, and elevation all architectural and structural designs for new exhibits. We visited site construction and documented all as-built conditions. I tested on site walk-throughs for safety and operations.
